Emily Clarkson Ball Grainger family papers, 1839-1962 (bulk 1926-1950).

The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence (1926-1962) of the Alexander K. Ball family. Arranged chronologically, the letters are mostly those of Emily Clarkson Ball Grainger (b. 1916), Emily Heyward Clarkson Ball (b. 1889), Alexander Ketsall Ball, Jr., Isaac Rhett Ball and his wife Faren (mainly in Decatur, Ala.), Garden Clarkson Ball, and Nathaniel Heyward Ball. Most of the letters are addressed to Emily Heyward Clarkson Ball at "The Raft" in Eastover, S.C., or her daughter Emily Clarkson Ball (later Emily Grainger) in Chatham, Va., Roanoke, Va., Staunton, Va., and elsewhere. Included are many letters written by the Ball brothers, Alexander, Garden, and Nathaniel Heyward Ball, during their military service during World War II in the U.S. and abroad. Miscellaneous items include school records and financial papers of Emily Clarkson Ball Grainger. Also included are letters (1878) from Emily Barnwell Heyward to her future husband Alexander Garden Clarkson; letters (1917) from William Anderson Clarkson to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Garden Clarkson, written during his military training in Chattanooga, Tenn., and elsewhere, prior to active service abroad in World War I; and two letters (1839, 1842) to William Clarkson, the earlier one from Rev. N.B. Screven in Grahamville, S.C., much of which is a message of Christian exhortation which he wishes Mr. Clarkson to convey to his slaves. The collection also includes correspondence (1862-1904) of Jane Ball Shoolbred (b. 1823), mostly letters from her in Cordesville, S.C., Charleston, S.C., Moncks Corner, S.C., and elsewhere, to her friend Julia Saffrey Obear (b. 1813) in Winnsboro, S.C., and to Emily Stephen Obear (b. 1849), concerning family, friends, and other matters.
